We have many happy memories of enjoying Mike’s company at social events. It was always easy to chat to him about a range of subjects and his unassuming manner led you to forget what a distinguished academic he was. I first heard Mike’s name years before I met him from a friend, Jochen, whose supervisor he was for his doctorate and who always spoke of him with huge respect and it was a pleasure to later make his acquaintance.
